HURRICANE & WIND SPECIFICATION EDUCATION
- WHY YOUR PRODUCT NEEDS IT!
Wind mitigation requirements differ from State to State, Country to Country and Continent to Continent. While structural integrity testing is quite similar, the level of application and requirements of the testing processes and procedures are not and require careful navigation for a new product manufacturer who has never undergone the architectural testing and certification process previously.
Hurricane & Wind Specification Education consults are conducted using guidance parameters set forth by AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association), Miami-Dade County & Florida Building Code (Testing Application Standards), ASTM (American Society Of Testing & Materials & TDI (Texas Department of Insurance).

Bennett, Power & Purvis International uses a three phase education consulting process through our BEC's (Building Envelope Consultants). The education consults provide building envelope product manufacturers, glazing providers and architects with complete hurricane and wind specification information in order to understand compliance requirements and successfully navigate wind mitigation tests conducted at an approved testing laboratory.

Phase One: (Product, Purpose & Province)
Phase one consists of defining the product, purpose and the province in which the product will be employed. Required gateway testing sizes vary by product. A Building Envelope Consultant (BEC) will discuss the product type desired with the product manufacturer, hardware limitations, reinforcement options and glazing limitations to refine the product to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
The second part of phase one is to define the purpose of the product. Currently products are categorized in terms of their application and purpose into four performance classes R- Residential, LC- Light Commercial, CW- Commercial Window, AW- Architectural Window. Each performance class has defined gateway parameters and performance requirements in addition to minimum size stipulations.
The final step in phase one is to define the region of the USA or Canada that the product manufacturer wishes to sell their products in. Just as performance classes require certain testing criteria, certain municipalities and localities of the USA & Canada require specific testing protocols and specifications be adhered to. Two examples of this are Miami-Dade County and the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI).

Phase Two:(Evaluate, Educate & Effectuate)
Phase two consists of evaluating the products, size, projected performance under hurricane wind and water testing conditions, educating the product manufacturer on potential weak points in product construction or glazing composition and finally effectuating solutions by way of revision suggestions by the BEC.

Phase Three: (Revise & Report)
Phase three consists of combining phase one and two education phases, revised glazing notes, reinforcement and product member calculations and projected product performance charts into one final FFP (Fit For Purpose) report. All pertinent information to prove calculations and projected performance will be reported along with a revision log of changes that have been made from the original product.
Note: Our Hurricane & Wind Specification Consulting service can provide your company with valuable data charts and reports that can diagnose points of strength, weakness and advise on revisions to product composition. Bennett, Power & Purvis International does not provide engineering services for submittal to any third party agency. Services and consulting are for research and development purposes only.
